Draft 2 Audience Feedback

I asked a group of people who were in the editing room to watch my short film and give me some feedback on it. It was important that I didn't know these people so that they weren't biased and gave me an honest opinion.

I got responses from boys and girls, and they were around the same age as me, so they fit in my target audience. Their responses were:

I also sent my film to friends, family and the actors who were in the film to see what they thought of it.

I also showed the film to the relatives of one of the people who the film is based on. They cried, meaning that my film provokes a strong emotional response which is what I wanted it to do, I wanted it to make people stop and think about the people in their lives and how dementia effects us all.

Summary

  • My film provoked a strong emotional response
  • The narrative is understandable and easy to follow
  • It displays the symptoms of dementia and what its like to care for someone with dementia in a believable and relatable way
  • There are some changes I could make to the editing of my film to make it better. It was suggested that I lower the saturation of the flashback scenes to make them stand out more as separate to the present day scenes.

Cutting out Scenes 7 and 8

I have decided to cut out scene 7 and scene 8 (the bedroom scene). I have chosen to do this because

  • My film already looks as if it is going to be too long
  • It doesn't add much to the narrative
  • I don't like how I filmed it
  • This is the part of the script I am least proud of, I rushed writing it a few days before we filmed it. This also led to a lot of improvisation by the actors, and although they were fantastic, overall this was the part of the narrative I was least happy with.

Question 1a: Creativity

How have you creatively experimented with technology?
Which media texts and producers have influenced your creative decisions?
How have you used storyboards, drafts, animatics and test material to structure your creative process?
Consider your creative choices - use of camera, lighting, colour, mise-en-scene etc. How did you make these decisions and how did these contribute to the final production?

Non-destructive software -
undo/redo
experimental
try out ideas
non-linear editing of work - not having to edit in order
project window, timeline, effects window
Named texts - date, producer, institution

  • I looked at a number of contemporary drama short films
  • I also looked at drama in television

Non-linear narrative - reflects Henry's state of mind and confusion.

Question 1a: Skills Development

  • 30 minutes - about six paragraphs
  • Skills development from foundation portfolio to advanced portfolio
  • Must communicate the brief(s) to the examiner
  • What, how, why, what effect?
The question is based upon the five areas of
  • Digital technology
  • Creativity
  • Research and Planning
  • Post-production
  • Using conventions for real media texts

Digital Technology

How has digital technology helped you to capture your ideas for media production?
  • In both my music magazine and my short film, I used digital technology to do my research. For example, I used Google Images to look up existing music magazines to identify what features would make my product conventional. Furthermore in my Advanced Portfolio I used YouTube and Vimeo to look at short films to analyse the conventions of them.
What benefits do digital technologies offer over analogue? Are there any disadvantages?
  • Digital technologies are a lot more accessible and allow a lot more flexibility in pre-production, production and post-production.
How did digital technology influence your work in post-production - for example in the creative of video effects, or the manipulation of images.

How have your skills with digital technology developed, and how has this influenced your productions?
  • I have developed my photoshop skills and learnt how to use Adobe Premier Pro. I also used YouTube to look for tutorials on how to use different tools in Photoshop and Premier Pro to make my work a higher standard.
What role might digital technology play in the distribution of your work?
  • I will be distributing my short film online so that it reaches the target audience.

Teacher Feedback from Draft 1

  • The poster looks a bit plain
  • Editing is a bit off in some sequences of my film, and it needs finishing before proper feedback can be given
  • Double-page spread needs finishing
