**Post dates have been changed so that all of my work from the different products I have made (short film, poster and double-page spread) are grouped together and therefore not all dates reflect when work was originally posted.**

Improving my Double-Page Spread

Draft 4

My Improvements

In order to add the text to my double-page spread, I exported my design as a JPG and opened Microsoft Publisher. I then inserted the image as a background on an A3 Landscape layout. Now I could insert and align my text a lot easier than on Adobe Photoshop.

Then I inserted and aligned my text. I put the text in columns because this is conventional of magazines.

I added a Drop Cap for the first letter of my article and for the Q's for the questions to make them stand out more. It is also a convention of magazines.

Next, I made the stars yellow so that they stood out more as well as moving them to the left side of the page. I did this because we read from left to right and I want it to be one of the first things the audience sees, as knowing a film received four stars may make them more likely to want to read more about it.

I also added a pull quote which is conventional of magazine spreads.

I decided to change the stars to a symbol for my film having won an award. Because my film is a student film, I chose a local film festival as it would be more realistic for my film to win one of these rather than an award from an international film festival. I am also going to add this to my poster to create synergy between the two products.

Then I added a standfirst.

I didn't like how there was a lot of blank space below the standfirst so I moved the main text and secondary image up a bit so that there wasn't as much blank space.

Double-Page Spread Draft 4

  • I changed the colour of the main background to grey.
  • I moved the skyline to the corner and used an image of a film reel as the background instead of having just the white strip across the top. I added a drop shadow to it to make it stand out.
  • I lowered the saturation of the main image so that it matches that of my poster to create synergy between the two products.

Double-Page Spread Draft 3

  • I added a headline
  • I changed the font of the headline of my article. I have put the two words I want to stand out ('different' and 'dementia') in white so that they stand out more.

I added the film award from my double-page spread to my poster to create synergy between my two ancillary texts.

Poster Draft 6

I added a Film Festival image to show people where my film will be shown. However, I don't like this so I think I might remove it. Also, especially in the digital age we are living in, it is quite common for films to be distributed online and only online. Therefore I think this is what I might do for my film.

UPDATE (20/03/18)

I have decided to remove the film festival logo and replace it with the award which I have used on my double-page spread to create synergy between the products.

Poster Draft 5

I added a hashtag to my poster. I did this because my film will be distributed on social media so it will encourage people to share the film and talk about it on sites such as Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.

Process of Editing My Alternative Poster Design

Alternative Poster Draft

This is another layout that I have tried for my poster. It is portrait because this is what is conventional when posters are in publications such as film magazines. However, my short film is distributed on YouTube (conventional of films by independent film companies) and because of this it will be shared through social media. Therefore the preferred orientation for a poster is landscape because this is the dimensions which are used for images on social media.

Poster Draft 2

I changed the saturation of the image and added the title.
I also added social media icons as it is a convention of short films for them to be distributed online.
I also added the production company logo I created to give brand identity.

Using the Clone Stamp Tool

I used the clone stamp tool in Adobe Photoshop to remove the plants in the background of the image as I felt they were distracting and took the focus away from the main focus of the image - the characters.
