Introduction to Planning and Research

TRANSCRIPT:

"After a lot of thought I decided to make my short film about dementia, because it is a subject that effects millions of people and deserves recognition and awareness.
So now I had my subject I decided I needed to do some research. I started by covering some of the initial points which I thought I would need to know in order to make a short film which would do dementia justice. These included, what exactly is dementia and how does it affect the mind, because although I thought I had a pretty good idea I was entirely sure. I also wanted to look at the symptoms and the signs of dementia, as well as the different types because I thought having a good background knowledge of dementia would mean I would be able to portray this well in my characters. I found that this very complex and I’d need to do a lot more research.

I also looked at the way is being portrayed in film and television to see how they show the illness accurately at the same time as being creative and making something that an audience could enjoy.

As well as this I looked at how dementia is shown in the media in general. Through this I decided I needed to look more into the politics which surrounds dementia such as disability cuts and the dementia tax. Another area of dementia which I have decided I would like to look more into is the different charities that help people who are suffering from dementia and their families.

So now I had a few questions. ‘What do I do next? And how do I turn a subject as complex as dementia into believable and interesting story while handling it with the respect and sensitivity it deserves.

Now that I have the points of research that I wanted to cover it was time to look into these further and then start to come up a plan for my film and move into the pre-production stages."
